Erieview Tower

Today

Erieview Tower opened in 1964 as the centerpiece of an urban development program known as the Erieview Project.  The 40-story building was designed by the renowned architectural firm of Harrison & Abramovitz.  Original plans incorporated a large open-air plaza extending from Erieview Tower west to East Ninth Street .

General Contractor:         Turner Construction

Architect:                         Harrison and Abramovitz

Building Structure:

Framework Steel:             10,000 tons

Gross area:                      864,000 square feet

Gross weight:                  80,290 tons

Gross volume:                 11,575,000 square feet

The plan was for groups of low buildings accented by vertical towers.  In an effort to accomplish this large feat, a number of small buildings were to be cleared.

A 40-story tower at E. 12th St. and St. Clair was the hub of the plan, with a plaza and reflecting pool stretching west to E. 9th Street

In 1985 The Richard E. Jacobs Group, Inc. purchased the building and began plans to transform the plaza into a shopping center that would serve as an amenity to Erieview Tower and the surrounding office buildings.  Architect Anthony Belluschi was commissioned to design a structure that would complement Erieview Tower . For years, Tower at Erieview remained isolated with a vast plaza, until the Galleria, a two story shopping center, was constructed in 1987. The Galleria at Erieview combines a dramatic glass enclosed two-level design with a broad mix of retail tenants and eating establishments that serve Erieview Tower and the surrounding community.  It also served as a major catalyst to the revival of the downtown Cleveland community.
